Who in their right minds would want to invite pests to their home? That’s probably what all homeowners typically think and rightfully so. Pests are a nuisance and can cause property damage around the house while creating an unhygienic environment. However, at the same time, these same homeowners have created an environment that not only appeals but allows pests to fester.
We have some tips that will make your home unappealing to pests. Having them tear any prior invitation that was sent out.
Leaving clutter around the house is just asking for trouble. Whether it is a few boxes or a stack of old magazines, pests are attracted to clutter. Most homeowners think that as long as there is no food being left out, they can stay clear of pests. However, any type of clutter will attract them. In fact, rats, spiders, cockroaches, and other insects tend to take shelter in the clutter. It provides them with a dark, crowded space where they can easily nest without being detected.
The first thing you need to do to avoid this, start to declutter. Store whatever you need to keep and throw everything else out. When storing, don’t use cardboard boxes, instead get plastic boxes with lids. This makes sure that rats can’t chew their way through to next in the box.
We won’t even get into the hazardous issues linked to leakages such as mold and structural issues. But leaking pipes around the home need to be taken care of immediately. Rats, cockroaches, and other insects have an attraction to damp areas. Leakages also lead to stagnant water in your home which provides mosquitoes with a breeding ground.
Water is vital for pests to survive, most can survive for up to a month on just water, with no food. That is why it is important that you take care of leaks as soon as you are aware of them. This way you make sure not to provide pests with an environment in which they can thrive.
Food and waste are top on the list of attraction for pests. This means taking your trash out immediately after your can is full. By taking it out, we mean outside your home into the trash container. If you let it sit inside or outside, even if it is properly closed, there is a good chance pest will come anyways. They just have a knack for finding food and waste. You also need to make sure the trash can is clean. Sometimes trash can leak through or leave residue in the can, so clean it often.
Appliances in which you make or heat food in any way needs to be cleaned out after you’ve used it a couple of times. The toaster, microwave, and oven usually have food particles left over after they have been used. This will attract pests such as rats and cockroaches to the kitchen. Which can lead to health-related issues because pests aren’t hygienic at all and they can come in contact with your food items.
Cleaning your appliances after use is the best way to ensure there are no food particles left over. Appliances that are often used such as the microwave can be cleaned out once or twice a week. While the oven should be cleaned at least once a month.
Notice a crack or hole in the wall or door, cover it immediately. They are like an open invitation for pests to just waltz into your home. Small insects can easily crawl through these openings and most rats can too. They also provide them with an easy escape route to exit as soon as they are spotted and re-enter at a later time. Fill any crack or hole that you find around the house and apply to proof so the entry is sealed off for pests.
If you ensure that your home doesn’t have a welcoming environment for rats and other pests, then you won’t really have to worry about having to get rid of them. Follow the guideline mentioned above and your home should be pest free. The way it was meant to be.
